ABOUT

cooking class instructor

 Junko Smyth

 Cooking Instructor

Born and raised in Tokyo, Junko moved to Perth in 1996 and has made Western Australia her home ever since.  (Spent 2004~2011 in Japan)

With more than 10 years of experience teaching cooking to people from many different backgrounds, Junko is passionate about sharing the flavours, techniques and everyday food culture of Japan. Her classes focus mainly on home-style Japanese cooking, together with popular Korean, Chinese and other Asian dishes that she regularly enjoys cooking herself.

For Junko, teaching is one of the most enjoyable parts of cooking. She loves meeting people who are curious about Japanese food and showing them that delicious Japanese meals don't have to be complicated or difficult to prepare. Her aim is to give students the confidence to recreate the dishes at home using practical techniques and ingredients that are easy to find.

Rather than sophisticated restaurant-style cuisine such as traditional Kaiseki, Junko specialises in the kind of food Japanese families actually cook and enjoy at home — simple, comforting and full of flavour. Alongside well-known favourites, students can also discover everyday dishes that they may never have seen on a Japanese restaurant menu.

Her classes are held in her own kitchen, creating a relaxed, friendly and homely atmosphere where everyone can cook, learn, ask questions and enjoy the experience together.

After many years of teaching, Junko's enthusiasm has only grown stronger. She continues to love introducing people to Japanese and Asian cooking and

hopes to inspire even more people to discover how enjoyable, approachable and rewarding cooking these dishes at home can be.

Sessions run for 2.5 to 3 hours, conducted by Junko (and an assistant when more than 4 participants) at her home in Meadow Springs.
Up to 6 participants can be accommodated for most of the classes enabling them to have a very hands-on cooking experience.  Due to time restrictions and the size of our class, our sit-down meal time at the table after cooking is a bit limited.  You'll be sent home with some of the meals to share with your family/friends ☝️
